The council has adopted the section of Kreutzer Road between the R/R crossing and Dundee Road, including the section along the south entrance to the St. Mary parking lot.

On Saturday, February 25, 2012, three Knights of Columbus Free Throw Champions from the local competition held by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council advanced at the District Competition held at St. Margaret Mary School in Algonquin.

Ryan Mavrinac was the District Champion for the Boys 14 year old bracket, Adam Horan was District Champion for the Boys 12 year old bracket and Katelyn Weidner was District Champion for the Girls 11 year old bracket.

They will compete again at the Regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at St. Thomas School in Crystal Lake for a chance to compete at the state level.

Joe Samme Knight of the Month—January 2012

At the January meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Knight Joe Samme as Knight of the Month for January 2012, recognizing his contributions to the council’s activities.

Joe joined the Knights of Columbus in October 2011 and immediately looked for ways he could become an active member of the council by participating in the various charitable, service and fund raising activities sponsored by the council.

Joe helped fabricate Nativity sets that can be seen displayed in front yards throughout Huntley. The money donated for the Nativity sets is used to fund various charitable activities of the council. Additionally, Joe also helped with the parking lot at old St. Mary’s Churchfor the annual Huntley Turkey Testicle Festival, with funds from the parking donations helping the council’s charity actions. Joe also helped with the quarterly blood drive in December and has signed up to help on a future council project.

Joe has exemplified the Knights of Columbus mission of “In service to one. In service to all” in a short period of time earning him the recognition as Knight of the Month for January 2012.

At the December meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Sir Knight Lou Schutt as Knight of the Month for December 2011, recognizing his contribution of time to the quarterly blood drives sponsored by the council.

Lou can be found at the sign up table in the narthex of St. Mary’s Catholic Church after the Sunday Masses, assisting parishioners as they sign up to become blood donors at the quarterly blood drives sponsored by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus. Lou cheerfully donates his time eight weekends each year to help parishioners sign-up as donors. Lou also can be found at each of the drives, greeting donors as they arrive at the blood drive and assisting them to complete the necessary paperwork prior to donating.

In 2011 a record 396 pints of blood were donated by generous parishioners and Huntley residents. The St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666 sponsors a blood drive each quarter in cooperation with Heartland Blood Centers

At the November meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Sir Knight Jerry Plaszcewski as Knight of the Month for November 2011, recognizing his dedication to the Sweats for Seniors Program.

Each year, Griswold Special Care, with support from the St. Mary Knights of Columbus, sponsors the Sweats for Seniors Program. The aim of this program is to help local seniors in nursing homes, rehab facilities, assisted living facilities as well as seniors who are homebound keep warm during winter. For the past four years, Sir Knight Jerry Plaszcewski dedicates countless hours each fall and winter coordinating collection points and gathering sweats to help seniors who otherwise would not have new sweats to be comfortable during the severe northern Illinois winters.

The Sweats for Seniors Program began four years ago by Griswold Special Care of McHenry, North Kane, Northwest Cook, DuPage and Maywood. Each year donated sweatpants and sweatshirts are collected for distribution to seniors. It is common that seniors are always cold and the donated sweats help them keep warm and are easy for them to put on and take off each day.

The program is coordinated by Griswold Special Care, a non-medical home care company. Griswold Special Care refers Caregivers who provide in-home care services including personal care, homemaking, companionship, and other home care services. On Saturday, December 3, 2011, 92 pints of blood were donated at the quarterly blood drive sponsored by The St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, in cooperation with Heartland Blood Centers headquartered in Aurora and the generous participation by parishioners of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley and other local residents.

The blood drives sponsored in 2011 by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666 resulted in a total of 396 pints of blood donated by generous parishioners and local residents.

St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus announce local Free Throw Champions

St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus and some of their children helping and participating at the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship sponsored by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus on January 14, 2012 at Centegra HealthBridge Fitness Center in Huntley.

Several boys and girls from the Huntley area, ages 10-14, were named local champions of the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and earned the right to compete at the district level. St Mary of Huntley Council #11666 sponsored the competition January 14^th at Centegra Health Bridge, Huntley. All youngsters ages 10-14 were eligible to participate.

Gayle Moore was the 10-year old girls’ champion. In the 11-year-olds’ bracket Katelyn Weidner was the girls’ champion and Conor Krohne was the boys’ champion. Twelve-year-old winners in the girls’ and boys’ division were Morgan Clausen and Adam Horan. The 13-year-old boys’’ division was won Michael Gawron and the fourteen-year-old boy’s champions was Ryan Mavrinac. Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.

Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held on Saturday, February 25th at 12 noon at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School, Algonquin, with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Competition Scheduled for January 14, 2012

The local Free Throw Championship Competition sponsored by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666 will be held at 9:00AM until 11:45AM with awards at noon, Saturday, January 14, 2012, at the Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, 10450 Algonquin Road, Huntley, Illinois. All girls and boys ages 10 to14 are invited to participate for free at the local level of competition for the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with the winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus International Headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 10-14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year, more than 130,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3000 local competitions.

On Saturday, November 5, 2011, the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council sponsored the Regional Soccer Challenge Competition for the annual Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge at the Tomaso Sports Park in Huntley. The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is sponsored annually by local Knights of Columbus Councils, with local winners progressing through district, regional and state competitions. National and International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based in New Haven, CT, on scores from state level competitions.

At the Regional Competition Gold Medals were awarded to the Champions who earned the right to compete at the state level.

In the boys competition the Gold Medal Winners were AJ Leidig for the 10 year old bracket, Luke P. Salamon for the 11 year old bracket, Luke Weber for the 12 year old bracket, Nick Stanek for the 13 year old bracket and Alex Vonderhaar won the 14 year old bracket.

The girls Gold Medal Winners were Mackenzie Kobrick in the 10 year old bracket, Maria Smith in the 11 year old bracket, Dana Taylor in the 12 year old bracket, Brianna Berillo in the 13 year old bracket. There were no competitors in the 14 year old bracket.

The St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, in cooperation with Heartland Blood Centers will sponsor a blood drive from 8 AM to 12:20 PM on Saturday, December 3, 21011, at St. Mary Catholic Church located at 10307 Dundee Road in Huntley.

The Knights have sponsored 3 blood drives in 2011 with 305 units of blood being donated this year, including a record 116 units donated at the most recent blood drive held in July of this year. With the generosity of the Knights, the parishioners of St. Mary’s and their Huntley neighbors, the goal is to exceed 400 units of this gift of life for 2011. At the October meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Sir Knight Gary Radaszewski Knight of the Month for October 2011, recognizing his efforts as Chairman of the council’s Intellectual Disabilities Drive held in September of this year.

One of the most popular and successful programs conducted by Knights of Columbus state and local councils for the benefit of people with intellectual disabilities is the fund-raiser in which councils collect donations outside stores and on street corners. In appreciation, the donor is offered a candy bar, often a Tootsie Roll. The high visibility of this program has led to the campaign being referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” The nickname is understandable, but misleading. The Knights of Columbus has no official tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer.

As Chairman of this activity, Gary secured permission where required to allow the Knights to stand outside stores and on street corners in Huntley during the drive. Also, he motivated Knights from the 245 members of the council to volunteer their time during the weekend of the drive and arranged schedules for the volunteers to be at the various locations in Huntley throughout the weekend of the drive. On the weekend of the drive, Gary volunteered his entire weekend to coordinate the efforts of his Brother Knights at the various locations in and around Huntley.

The funds donated at the various locations are then donated to local organizations that help people with Intellectual Disabilities. Some of the local organizations who received donations in the past are the Light Center Foundation in Union, FINDS (Family Ideas Network for Downs Syndrome) in Crystal Lake, Adult & Child Rehab Center in Woodstock, NISRA Foundation in Crystal Lake, SEDOM (Special Education District of McHenry County) in Woodstock, Catholic Diocese of Rockford Special Education Fund in Woodstock, Special Camps for Special Citizens in Downers Grove, and the Illinois Special Olympics in St. Charles.

At a ceremony held at St. Mary of Huntley Catholic Church on October 11, 2011, local resident and Knight Tom Varkados and his family led the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666 in honoring Fire Safety Inspector Richard Fitzsimons, who perished in the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York 10 years ago. The Knights presented a flag which was part of the Carpentersville Healing Memorial Field where flags dedicated to those who perished in the attacks 10 years ago. The flag was presented to Richard’s brother, Sun City resident and St. Mary’s parishioner, Robert Fitzsimons.

Tom and his wife, Kim, personally knew someone lost in the attack. At the presentation, Tom spoke of his family remembering those lost in the 9/11 attacks. .

“My family, like many of you, learned of Richard’s life and accomplishments as Bob spoke lovingly, and proudly of him, at the 9/11 Commemorative Mass here at St Mary.

As Bob spoke, there were few dry eyes in the Church, including mine, and when he was through, those present afforded him a well-deserved standing ovation for sharing with us the love and pride he has for his brother.

Later that day, we visited the Carpentersville Healing Memorial Field, and saw an impressive display of over 2000 American flags, dedicated to those fallen on 9/11. Each flag had a placard with the honoree’s name and some few nice words about them. We looked for and found Richard’s flag and this is what his placard said:

Richard Fitzsimons kept his Irish roots well watered. For him, a visit to Ireland was going home, said Colleen, his daughter. He last saw Dublin in the summer, when he ate, drank, and danced for 13 hours to celebrate a niece’s wedding. At home, he kept busy. In his job as a fire safety inspector at the World Trade Center, he conducted drills and planned evacuations. He was, Ms. Fitzsimons said, almost certainly “saving people right from the start.”

When the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993, it took nearly nine hours to evacuate both towers, a timeframe to act no one was afforded on 9/11. I think we would all agree that Richard’s preparation and planning in the time leading up to the second attack may have indeed saved un-told thousands of lives.

Richard was also a Brother Knight in the Third Degree, so it’s with that spirit of brotherhood, it gives me great pleasure to present this Commemorative Flag to Robert and his family on behalf of the St. Mary Knights of Columbus.”

Welcome new Fourth Degree Knights

On Saturday, October 22nd, five Brother Knights completed their Fourth Degree Exemplification.. Hosted by the Father William Boland Assembly 1702, the event was held at the Rock Falls Hotel, followed by a banquet dinner and award ceremony.

Candidates from St. Mary Huntley Council 11666 were: Domingo Boneta, Marty Guzik, Ted Mellenthin, Tom Varkados, and Bob Westrich.

The Fourth Degree was first considered in 1886 when the order was in its infancy. Several factors contributed to the development of this additional degree: The rapid expansion of the Order across the land, the enthusiasm created by the ceremonials, and activities of the three additional degrees. It is said, however, that a greater impetus to this development was the then prevalent spirit of anti-Catholicism which questioned our loyalty and patriotism and falsely charges us with owing our allegiance to the Pope in Rome and being less loyal and devoted to our country. The establishment of the Fourth Degree, dedicated to the principle of patriotism was resounding rebuttal of such false charges.

The ceremonials of the Fourth Degree are based on a them of Catholic citizenship and detail the contributions made by the Catholic Church to America from its discovery, exploration, and development to its present greatness. Our members are challenged to be always ready to sacrifice everything for our faith and our country. The response of our Order to the needs of our country in times of war attests to the fact that are true to our commitment. From its foundation, the Fourth Degree has provided honor guards for religious and civic ceremonies. Marching in our regalia, with the flag and our country before us, we are clearly identified as individuals who are not afraid to publicly display our devotion to church and country.

On Saturday, September 17, 2011, the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council held the annual Soccer Challenge at Deicke Park in Huntley for youth ages 10-14 years. This event was free to all participants and allows them to demonstrate their soccer goal kicking skills. It was held on “picture day” for the Huntley Park District soccer teams and co-located next to the area where the soccer teams had pictures taken.

This event is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based in New Haven, CT, on scores from state level competitions. All contestants on the local level were recognized for their participation.

The boy’s champions were Lucas Clemetson for the 10 year olds, Adrian Santos for the 11 year olds and Nick Starek was the champion for the 13 year olds. For the girls, Mackenzie Kobrick was the champion for the 10 year olds while Shannow Swalve was the 11 year old champion and Dana Taylor was the champion for the 12 year old girls.

Each of these winners will compete in the district competitions to be held on October 29, 2011 at St. Margaret Mary Church in Algonquin, Illinois, at 1 PM with an eye toward moving on to the regional competition which will be held at Tomaso Sports Fields in Huntley at 9AM, Saturday, November 5, 2011. Then the regional winners will progress to state and hopefully international levels.

At the September meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666 the trustees selected Gary Horan as Knight of the Month for September 2011, recognizing his efforts as chairman of the annual Knights Golf Outing.

The 2011 Golf Outing was held August 27^th at Crystal Woods Golf Course and included a hole-in-one contest and other prizes for the participants. This year proceeds from event will benefit vocations, Knights of Columbus charities, and a St. Mary family in need.
