At the conclusion of the September meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus, Sir Knight Ernie Matia was presented with the Golden Heart Award from Heartland Blood Centers by Jamie Lauer, Marketing Representative, Heartland Blood Centers.

In 2009 Ernie began to volunteer his time to organize the blood drives sponsored by the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666.  The first drive yielded 14 pints of blood.  The most recent blood drive sponsored by the St. Mary Knights on September 10, 2011 resulted in 116 pints of blood being donated.  Donating blood is truly donating the gift of life. 

At the presentation, Sir Knight Lou Schutt related a first-hand testimonial  how blood donors saved his life when he suddenly became ill and upon being hospitalized the blood needed to save him was available because of the generosity of so many donors. He encourages everyone who is able to donate blood to do so and give someone else the gift of life. 

The Knights sponsor the blood drives to provide a charitable opportunity for parishioners, neighbors and Knights to help others in need.

Commemorative Flag Presentation Ceremony for a Fallen Brother Knight

Please join us on Tuesday October 11 at 7:00 PM for a special presentation ceremony of a commemorative 9/11 flag to Robert Fitzsimons, a St. Mary parishioner. Robert's brother, Richard was killed in the World Trade Center tragedy on 9/11/01.

Richard P. Fitzsimons was a Brother Knight in the New York area. This flag flew over the Carpentersville 9/11 Healing Field Memorial and is to be presented to Robert and his family on behalf of the Huntley Knights.

This ceremony will immediately follow the Altar and Rosary Society Rosary Prayer which begins at 6:30.

Please come out and show our support for the family of a truly heroic Brother Knight.

Important Meeting Date Changes

The November general meeting will be held Wednesday November 16, one week earlier than normal, due to Thanksgiving.

The December officers meeting has been changed to Tuesday, December 6.

Brother Knights needed for October 11 Altar and Rosary Society Service

Knights are needed to stand at honor at the portrait of Mary during the Family Rosary sponsored by the St. Mary Altar and Rosary Society on Tuesday October 11 6:30 PM.

Brother Knights in attendance are requested for this month to wear either a tuxedo or a suit.

Subject: Support Religious Liberty: Action Required Before Sept. 30th

Worthy State Deputy:

I am writing to ask that you encourage every Knight of Columbus in your jurisdiction to take immediate action to support religious freedom and rights of conscience for Catholics and Catholic institutions.

The delegates at our 129th Supreme Convention in Denver in August unanimously passed a resolution pledging our support for freedom of conscience in health care. This resolution was in response to a rule recently issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as “preventive services” for women.

The new rule would force insurance plans to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods and sterilization procedures, including “emergency contraception” drugs that may cause an abortion by interfering with the implantation of a newly-conceived human being. The mandate will force individuals and groups with religious or moral objections to purchase and provide such coverage. The rule poses a serious threat to the religious freedom of both individuals and institutions.

The Department of Health and Human Service has established a period for public comment that ends on September 30th. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging Catholics to send an email message to HHS. The Bishops are also encouraging Catholics to show their support for bi-partisan legislation, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179 / S.1467), which would ensure that federal mandates do not violate the deeply-held moral and religious convictions of our citizens.

Please encourage every Knight in your jurisdiction to send an email message to HHS by visiting www.kofc.org/rights before September 30th. After sending a message to HHS, Knights will be automatically invited to send a message to their elected representatives in Congress, urging them to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act.

The Knights of Columbus will always support religious freedom as a basic civil right. No persons or institutions should ever be forced to act in a manner contrary to their moral and religious beliefs.

Life in the Spirit Seminar - Saturday, Oct. 22 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Mission of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is to encourage the awareness and experience of the role of the Holy Spirit among Catholics.

To that end the New Life Prayer group is offering this seminar to introduce people to the Life in the Spirit and , through the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

John Michael Talbot to perform at St. Mary Church in Huntley

 

Internationally known musician John Michael Talbot will perform a music and meditation service from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on October 9, 2011 at St. Mary Church in Huntley IL.  John Michael is recognized as Catholic music's most popular recording artist. The service will include selections from his latest album, “Worship and Bow Down.”

His artistic and humanitarian efforts have been recognized with awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Gospel Music Association, Mercy Corps and the Mother Teresa award. 

  

The service, sponsored by Relevant Radio and St. Mary Church, is free and open to all ages.  A free will offering will be collected to support John Michael’s ministries.

St. Mary Huntley Knights of Columbus 2011 ID Drive (Tootsie Roll Drive)

Despite the ever-present road construction in the Huntley area, Council 11666 Knights of Columbus members welcomed donors who turned out in great numbers to help support the annual drive ID  Drive (also known as the Tootsie Roll Drive) to help those with Intellectual Disabilities. 

The Varkados family helped collect donations at Tom's Market over the weekend.

Record turnout for Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge

A record 25 boys and girls, ages 10 through 14, participated in this year's Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. This year's event was sponsored by the St. Mary Huntley Knights of Columbus Council 11666, in cooperation with the Huntley Park District.

On Saturday, September, 2011, a record 116 pints of blood were donated at the quarterly blood drive sponsored by The St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, in cooperation with Heartland Blood Centers headquartered in Aurora and the generous participation by parishioners of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley and other local residents.  Of the 116 pints of blood donated, 34 were Knights from the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council.

Ten donors, including 6 Knights from the St. Mary’s Council made a double red cell donation.  The Knights making the double red cell donation were Don Walz, Don Moore, Mike Grunthaner, Dominjo Boneta, Scott Bytnar and Bill Byrne.  A double blood cell donation is similar to a whole blood donation, except a special machine is used to allow the donor to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while the donor’s plasma and platelets are returned to the donor. Red blood cells are the most frequently used blood component and are needed by almost every type of patient requiring transfusion. This donation process is as safe as whole blood donation.

In 2010, the four St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Blood drives totaled approximately 340 pints of blood donated.  So far this year the St. Mary’s Knight’s three blood drives have resulted in 304 pints of blood being donated.  The Knights would like to be the catalyst for donors.  The Knights are encouraging their members, parishioners and local residents to consider participating in these future drives and thus give the gift of life to help someone in need.  Their 2011 goal is to have 400 pints donated at their sponsored blood drives.
